WORKPLACE ACCIDENT

Sadly, more and more workers are injured on-the-job than ever before. While many companies have specific programs and safety protocols in place in order to keep their workers safe, this isn’t always enough. Safe and smart work practices undoubtedly go a long way in reducing risks posed to workers, but accidents still happen more often than we like to think. Due to the nature of many hard labor jobs, workplace accidents are often some of the most serious and life-changing.

It is important that anyone who sustains a workplace injury reports it right away.

While this many seem fairly obvious, many workers opt to keep the accident quiet, especially in the event their injury does not require immediate medical attention. However, in failing to report the accident, an employer has the right to deny medical treatment and benefits for any missed time from work.

As you can imagine, this can be devastating for the worker, especially in the event their injuries become more serious over time and require rehabilitation and extensive medical care. This is why it is important for us to drive home that reporting an accident right away and properly will go a long way in preventing any potential problems for the worker in the future.

If you sustain an injury at work – either minor or more serious – chances are your only source of recovery for damages will be a workers’ compensation claim. While many workers want to avoid a workers’ compensation claim in order to keep things on good terms with their employer, this is not the smart decision. Workers’ compensation claims are far easier to pursue successfully than a personal injury claim, which is often the fallback choice for those who do not report their accident right away.

Many workplace accidents involve devastating, life-changing injuries that may even require amputation of a hand, leg, arm, finger, toe, or foot. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 10,000 workers are victims of an amputation injury every single year in our country.

There are many different factors that can contribute to a workplace injury, including:

  • Falls on the same level
  • Struck by an object or piece of equipment
  • Equipment malfunction
  • Falls to lower levels
  • Overexertion (related to lifting, pushing, pulling, holding, carrying, or throwing items)
  • Lack of sleep
  • Roadway incidents
  • Accidents involving forklifts or other motorized land vehicles
  • Slip and trip accidents
  • Caught by equipment or other objects
  • Repetitive motion
  • Struck against an object or piece of equipment

These are just a handful of the most common causes of workplace accidents that we see here in Texas. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), worker deaths are still a serious problem. Today we see about 40 worker deaths a day in the United States.
